Thursday, July 1

I’ve never spent a Canada Day quite like today. In another time zone, in another city, filled with new friends; I woke up feeling tired from the lack of sleep from the night before, but also I anticipated the activities that would follow throughout the day. To start, we walked to McConnell Hall for breakfast where we had French toast with the usual eggs, sausages, and potatoes. After that, we were off to our different fitness groups.

For our morning lecture, we had the honour to listen to Rev. Dr. Norman J. Whitney and his speech on “Together in the Quest for the Good Life.” It was truly an inspiration to learn from his personal experiences and reflect on who we really are, while taking into consideration different emotions. It truly was an eye opening experience.

After lunch we had a special afternoon of Shad Olympics. We were split into our different house teams and competed in several different challenges. Our first game was sponge relay, followed by an interesting game of a sandal bucket race, and lastly a game of dodge ball. In the end, my team may not have won but we definitely came first in spirit and enthusiasm.

The first few showers came through that day and we went in to start packing for our trip. We had a quick power point presentation to learn more about our Fundy Trip for the weekend. After packing, we got ready for our barbecue. We loaded our overnight packs into the van and started to cook dinner. Although it was raining and we had to take cover, we still ended up with a delicious meal of burgers, hot dogs, chips and salsa, and watermelon. After, everyone got into the Canada Day spirit as we put on red and white shirts, Canadian spirited tattoos, and painted our faces. Unfortunately the storm got harder and we were no longer able to walk downtown to watch the fireworks. Instead we stayed in the main lounge to watch the Disney movie Earth. With everyone in the Canadian spirit, it was a still memorable and unforgettable day.
