July 6 - Day 10

We have been at Shad for 10 days now and I can say for sure that my experience so far has been extraordinary. Just today we melted rocks in a furnace that had a temperature of 1500 ÂșC. We also continued working on the robot we are creating. It has to be done by the end of this week! We worked on the circuit or “bread” board, basically all of the electrical components while yesterday we did all the mechanical components. Unfortunately, the robot did not move, so something must be wrong with the circuit board but we will figure it out tomorrow. Clearly we are all sleep deprived. Tonight we had our Poetry Late Night. It included a lot of great performances, but some of the highlights included Courtney performing the poem she had published that was the main idea for her Shad Tile, James and Han’s vocal speech performance of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” Andrea and Taylor T’s scene from The Taming of the Shrew, and Michael L’s “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss which was certainly entertaining. Our final performance by Rachel Chiarello was the most emotional performance of the night, which included the emotional and psychological journey she endured while her family faced cancer and the unfortunate effects of it. Our lectures today included a focus on the elementary and high school mathematical teaching system, mainly on why it does not work, and also why certain students excel while others do not. For fitness this morning, our group of 60 people split into three groups, participating in various activities which were soccer baseball, a walking tour of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Bordenball. While I cannot vouch for all the sports, I know that soccer baseball was definitely entertaining despite the rain that plagued us for half the time. While today has been great, last night was a special experience. We watched Survive This, a survival documentary show on YTV in which 8 teens (4 male 4 female) compete to be named Ultimate Survivor. All sixty of us crowded into the second floor lounge and watched the hour episode. We heard Les Stroud declare Colin the Ultimate Survivor. Overall, the Shad experience has been great thus far and I look forward to my next days here at the UNB campus.
