July 6

The buzzer of my roommate’s alarm shattered the calm air, breaking us from our dreams and deep sleep. It was 6:20. AM. Too tired to get out of bed, we rolled over, and covered our ears with the nearest pillow. ‘Snooze’ wouldn’t last forever. We got out of bed. With the window left open over night, the biting morning Newfoundland air sent shivers down our arms, goosebumps rising all over.

Running to the warm, refreshing showers, and quickly hopping out, we were rejuvenated and ready for the coming day. Morning recreation, an optional daily workout offered by the house leaders, is highly looked forward to, by myself, and many other Shads. Today, a simple jog around Long Pond removed any sleepiness and promoted an attentive mindframe for the lectures to come.

Visited by Randy Billard after breakfast, we received a lecture on business, telling of how to be great entrepreneurs. Followed by a Machine Vision lecture by Professor Nick Krouglicof, we learned of applications of 3D images, and 2D laser scans, and about the process of bringing a real world image into the digital computer realm.

Warm, cheesy aromatic fettuccine alfredo filled our nostrils as we entered the cafeteria for lunch. Good food is common at the famed Hatcher House. We feasted.

Off with filled belies, we went for our afternoon workshop, in my case, House Wiring Basics. After closely following a demonstration by the instructor, paired with another fellow Shad, I put together a common electrical configuration found in the home. We cut wires, stripped them, formed a circuit with a switch, and a light, and soon, we even had a hair-dryer going! We went for afternoon rec with a feeling of accomplishment fresh in our minds.

After dinner, we worked on our House Projects. We all put in effort, and now believe that a good idea is underway. The day ended with the evening chit-chat as we congregated for the final time of the night with snack.

As we head back to our dorms, lie down, and slowly fall asleep, the anticipation starts to build what’s to come tomorrow.

We can’t even imagine.
